Black tea is made from the leaves of the Camellia sinensis plant. It is a fully oxidized tea, which means that the hand-plucked leaves have undergone a process of withering, rolling, oxidation, and drying. The taste of black teas can vary depending on the specific type of tea and the region from which it hails. For example, black tea can be bold and robust, with strong flavors such as malt or smokiness, or it can be milder with more delicate flavors such as floral or fruity notes.
On a caffeine scale of 0–4, black tea measures a 3 on average, which is about 20% as much as coffee. Because it typically has a higher caffeine content than other types of tea, it is a popular choice for those craving a morning or midday boost. It is often served hot, but it can also be enjoyed iced, or even blended with milk and sweetener for a creamy treat. Some popular types of black tea include Darjeeling, Assam, Ceylon, and Keemun.
